Chapter 81

The next morning Melody didn’t feel rested at all when she got up. She had forgotten to take the painkillers Jon had bought and her whole body was aching when she woke up. Melody groaned in pain when she got up, she had to get ready. She went around the house to wake everyone and got dressed and got ready herself. J and Tyler had put their bags in the car the night before, now they were ready to go.

On their way to the city Melody stopped at 24 hours drive thru and got breakfast even though they weren’t serving breakfast yet. Burgers for breakfast wasn’t that bad. The roads were hardly busy and they were at Jon’s apartment in no time.

Jon’s bags stood all ready by the elevator door when Melody walked in with her children. The bags were all stacked by the closet so they could still walk past them into the kitchen.

Jon was sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee while his kids were still eating breakfast. Jon watched Melody walk in and got up when she walked into the kitchen to greet her. “You’re still sick.” He observed when he stood in front of her.
“No, I’m fine.” Melody lied, she still felt sick. She was getting sick of being sick, it had almost been a week and her cold still wasn’t gone.
Jon softly pressed his right hand against her forehead. “You still have a fever. You should really take those painkillers you’d feel better.” Jon almost pleated. He wanted her to feel better.
Melody looked tired and pale, Jon wanted to see her happy and bright.
“I’m fine.” Melody said again. She insisted on not taking any painkillers, she would get through it without them.

A little while later a van arrived for them. The driver put all the bags in the back of the van and they drove the 20 minute drive to the airport. It was only 6 o’clock, the road wasn’t very busy and they got to the airport easily. The kids were all still sleepy and didn’t say anything during the drive. Melody and Jon had the front seat for them and cuddled together as Melody dropped her head on Jon’s shoulder and closed her eyes.

At the airport the older boys helped their driver to get their bags to the VIP room where they didn’t have to wait long to board the plane. The bags were stuffed away in the bottom of the plane and everyone got on. Melody was amazed when she was the private Jon after walking inside behind Jon, the stewardess and the pilot. There were seats with tables, three rows of 2 chairs and sideway seats across the tables. Jon strapped Romeo and Jake in in the chairs that were at the front of the plane and Faith sat behind them. The older kids picked out their own spaced and Melody and Jon sat in the front row where they had loads of leg room.

Melody started getting nervous and was fidgeting in her seat, a little bit uncomfortable and a little bit scared.
“First time you’re flying?” Jon asked.
Melody nodded nervously.
“I was scared the first time too, hell I was scared the 50th time. You might not want to sit by the window. My dad made me sit there the first time, it last about 3 minutes.”
“Yeah you’re right.” Melody nodded. “I don’t want to see the ground going away.” She unbuckled her seatbelt and switched places with Jon.
“Ok now,” Jon said as he put the armrest between them up and scooted in his seat closer to her. “we do this.” He slid his arm behind her back and pulled her against him.
Melody nodded again, feeling a little bit more secure in his embrace. She didn’t worry about her kids, they had been on vacation with their dad before, it wasn’t the first time they were flying.
“Better?” Jon asked.
“Much.” Melody said, not entirely convinced.

The stewardess checked everyone’s buckles before she took her own seat and the pilot announced they were ready for takeoff.

As the plane started moving Melody got nervous again, in just a few minutes she would be in the air, where anything could happen. Jon noticed Melody getting nervous again and grabbed her hand with his free hand and gave a little squeeze. He used to scared of flying but with his job there was no way around it and with the help of his stewardess that calmed him down any time he got scared he got over it. There were still days he would get a little nervous too but those didn’t happen much anymore.

Melody squeezed Jon’s hand hard when the plane took off and they were up the air, Jon squeezed back. The higher they went the loser her grip, her fear being taken over by the pain in her ears with the pressure change. She swallowed a few times trying to make the pain go away, blaming the pressure she already had in her head but it didn’t help until the plane levelled again.
“You okay?” Jon asked when he noticed the painful look on her face, he knew pressure change could be painful.
Melody nodded again. “Fine.”
“Want those painkillers anyway?” He asked, she’d feel more relaxed while flying and wouldn’t feel as much pain if they landed in 5 hours and she would finally feel a bit better.
Melody grunted and looked around for her bag and got the pills out and took 1 even though she knew she would need 2 or 3 to actually feel better.
Jon didn’t say anything, it was something and hopefully it would make her feel a little bit better. He didn’t like seeing her sick and hearing her cough almost every 10 minutes.

It was still early morning and it was quiet in the cabin. After flying half an hour they heard nothing from the little kids and assumed they fell asleep. The bigger ones were in the back of the plane at the tables where it was quiet too. Melody’s painkiller finally started kicking in; Jon’s arm was still wrapped around her. Melody rested her head back on his shoulder and tried to catch up on some sleep.

Jon watched Melody sleep for a while; he could hear her breathe and smelled coconuts. He thought about how Melody would react to seeing the house in Hawaii, would she be amazed like when she first saw his apartment in New York? He was sure she would love it. Jon started thinking about the week after their vacation; he started worrying again if Richie would be with him but then remembered what was most important. And being away from home again for a month, then having a short break and back out for 2 months. At least those last 2 months Melody would be with him. He looked forward to it, spending 2 whole months with her, every minute of the day, and night. She looked so beautiful and peaceful when she slept. And what after those 2 months?

Jon shook his head, trying to get rid of all the thoughts, things would work out without worrying. He finally rested his head against his seat and closed his eyes too.
