Chapter 65

It was still windy; the beautiful sun was shining but the fierce wind made it cold outside. They should be sitting inside but Melody loved the view up here and it was quieter than she had expected it would. Her long hair whipped around her face and she had to keep pushing it behind her ears.
“Wild is the wind.” She joked.
Jon took a hold of her hair, getting it all together and put it in the back of her t-shirt, resting her against his chest again.
“It was your idea to sit outside.” But he did understand; he liked it here too. The building was high enough that there wasn’t much noise, they could hear the cars but it seemed like they were far away, it was just a distance sound.
He pulled a small book from his jeans back pocket and held it in front of her to show it. It was a small blue book, very thing and the cover read ‘passport’ and 'United States of America'.
“You got it?” She took the book from him and flipped through it.
“Was in the mail this morning.” He said with a big smile.
“I look horrible.” She said when she got to the page with her picture on. As usual she thought she should have used a better picture and should have gone to make new ones instead of taking the ones she had made last year.
“You’re beautiful.” He looked over her shoulder at the picture.
She turned her head around and reached to kiss his jaw, not able to reach his lips. “Now I can go with you.”
“Told you I would get it sooner.” He smiled again and kissed her head and held her tightly again.
“Thank you.” She settled back into his arms, her worries of the passport not arriving on time so she could go with him were all gone now. Her Jon, two months with him on the road.
“I’m glad you can come with me.” Kissing her again.

The clouds drifted in the sky, making patterns. When they covered the sun and took away its warmth, he could feel Melody shiver against him. “We should go inside. My parents will be here soon anyway.” They were sitting outside for quite a while now and he was getting colder too.

He was right, as soon as they were settled on the couch, the elevator doors opened and his parents walked in the room. Jon looked over his should to see who it was and started to get up.
“Don’t get up angel; you’d just have to sit down again anyway.” His mom said and a few minutes later she and her husband sat down in the couch next to them. “Who’s your lady friend?” She asked sweetly when she looked over at Melody.
“My lady friend is my girlfriend Melody.” He answered his mum and pulled Melody closer to him.
“Your girlfriend?” His mom said with big eyes, surprised. “You didn’t tell me that.”
“Yeah, she is.” He kissed the side of her face. “All mine.”
Melody smiled, happy she was his.
“Good, I’m glad you found her then.” She said to him and then turned to Melody. “Melody, I’m Carol, this is my husband John.” She gestured at her husband. “Oh you’ve met the kids have you?”
“Yeah last week, they’re great.” Melody said honestly, she liked Jon’s kids. They were all nice to her and they were just lovely to be around.
“Oh that’s good they’re lovely.” Carol said.
“Where are they?” John pitched in. They’d come all the way here, they wanted to see their grandkids too.

Jon said they were downstairs and got up to get them.
Carol shifted the tip of her seat, closer to Melody. “You better treat my Jonny good. I don’t want to see him hurt again.” Carol said sharply.
Melody didn’t know what to say for a second, surprised his mum would say that, she hadn’t expected that. “I wouldn’t dare hurt him, I love him.” Melody said, still surprised his mom almost snarled at him. She always thought she was so nice and friendly to everyone. Her words were true, she’d never hurt him, she couldn’t risk losing him. After the few months they had, especially the last two weeks, she couldn’t live without him anymore.

Downstairs Jon found Romeo and Jake playing with their electric racetrack. They noticed their dad and insisted him playing with them. Jake gave him one of the remote controllers; Jon gave in and sat down on the floor with them. Crawling over the tracks Romeo picked up 3 cars and put them at the start line.

He really didn’t have time to race but he thought Melody would be fine with his parents and it had been such a long time since he had played cars with them.

The lights turned green and the race started.
“First to do two laps.” Romeo said excited with his car in the lead, but not for long when Jon’s passed by..
“No, 3!” Jake said, making his car go even fast. He passed Romeo’s blue car and tried to gain on Jon’s red.
The second round Romeo sped up again and got closer to Jake again but the red car stayed in the lead. In the third lap, in the final bend Jon stopped his car. “Fuck it broke!” He said frantically, not really pushing the buttons. Jake’s car sped past him with Romeo close behind and crossed the finish line.
“I won, I won, I won.” Jake said excited, almost jumping up and down as he sat.
“Well done.” Jon tussled his hair and high fived him. Leaning over the track to high five Romeo too.
“Daddy, you swore.” Romeo said when he put his hand back down.
Jon realized he had. “I did, but that doesn’t mean you should.” He said strictly, he might swear but he still believed a 7 year old shouldn’t.

Melody was getting uncomfortable with Jon’s parents. John had switched the tv to a sports channel and was now watching some football game, absorbed into the game he didn’t pay attention to Carol or Melody. Melody was sure Jon would be the same while watching a football game too. He did it while watching the news but during football it would probably be worse she thought. Carol kept interrogating her, asking her about marriage and why they got divorced.
“Don’t you dare cheat on him too.” Carol snarled when Melody had explained why she got divorced 5 years ago.
“I never cheated on anyone.” She said defensively.
“That’s what Dorothea always said too.” She sniped back.
Melody started to wonder if John really didn’t hear anything of this and wouldn’t say anything to his wife. “She probably needed someone to be there for her.” She was standing up for Dorothea? She hadn’t even met her or anything but when she was still married to Jon, Melody always had respect for her, even now.
“Jonny has a very important job. He can’t be around all the time, you better realize that too.”
Melody didn’t know what to say. She’d only really just had 2 weeks with him, he had been gone all the time before that. She had waited for 2 months just to have these 2 weeks. Getting angrier about what Carol had said, she knew he wouldn’t be around all the time. Melody gave up and didn’t say anything more.
