Chapter 11

Sunday evening the kids arrived. As usual they had loads to talk about and couldn’t wait to tell. That led to yelling because they wouldn’t let each other finish or would interrupt because someone was not telling it right. The oldest two soon lost interest in it all and went to their room. After sending the younger ones she decided to phone Jon before she went to bed. She found her phone in her bedroom and phoned him.
Monday morning was hectic. Melody tried to get the kids ready which always took longer on Mondays. She just finished making lunches after finding lost clothes when she heard the door bell. It’s only 7.30am! She thought. She opened the door and saw a big bouquet of red roses. She gasped when she saw it, it must have been about 2 dozen roses, unbelievable. She took them from the delivery guy and thanked him before shutting the door. For a second she just looked at the flowers before taking them to the kitchen to find a vase to put them in.

“Where did those come from?” Faith asked when she walked into the kitchen to get some breakfast.
“I guess from Jon” Melody said, she hadn’t checked for a card yet.
“Doesn’t it say?” Faith asked while Melody was already looking for a card. She finally found it, it read, One for every day, Jon signed with a big X.
Melody explained it did come from Jon and she started counting the flowers. “27.” She said out loud.
“That’s a lot.” Faith said with a mouthful of toast.
Melody quickly reached for her phone to call him then changed her mind; she thought it was too early to phone him.

Instead she got the children ready and drove them to school. She went to the high school first, which was closest by and started earlier, then off to the middle school and the elementary school. After dropping everyone off, saying goodbye to them, she drove to work. It would be a busy day today, it being Valentine’s Day, a lot of people booked a room for the night or a weekend trip. During her lunch break she told Lori about the roses she got while they sat down to have their lunch.
“I got roses this morning.” Melody said while pulling back her chair to sit down.
“This morning? That early? You leave before 8 don’t you?”
“Yes, around 7.40 this morning.”
“I didn’t know they delivered that early. I didn’t get anything.” Lori complained.
“Oh don’t you worry, you’ll get something, you know Shawn doesn’t get you anything till tonight. Every year you complain and there’s always a surprise when you get home, so don’t worry.” Melody said.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Lori said with a smile, last year she got a very romantic dinner, she hoped it would be like that again.
“Oh, I still have to phone him to thank him!” Melody said. She had forgotten all about it. She quickly phoned him only to get his answering machine. “He must be busy.” Melody said as she put her phone away again.

Half an hour later Jon noticed a missed phone call. He knew Melody would be back to work now and decided he’d phone her after sound check, she might be home by then.

Melody had a short days this week and went home at 3 instead at 6. When she got home all the kids were home from school watching tv. They’ve all been home for at least 20 minutes so she sent them to their rooms to start their homework. After a while they finally got up and got started. When they all had left the room she phoned Jon again.

Jon was on stage doing sound check when he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. He stopped singing, took his phone, check the caller ID and he answered his phone as he walked to his quick change room next to the stairs off the stage. The rest of the band watched how he had left the stage; he never left that abruptly unless he was getting pissed off. He answered his phone when he pulled the piece of cloth the close his room, as it was just a room with hung up pieces of cloth forming a small room, and sat down.
“Hey, did you get your surprise?” He asked getting right to the point.
“Yes, Jon, they’re beautiful, thank you so much.” Melody said happily looking over at the vase of roses in the kitchen.
“It’s Valentine’s you deserve it. Just make sure they’re gone by the next time I’m at your place.”
“But I didn’t get you anything.” She said disappointed, she hadn’t thought about getting him something and wouldn’t have known how to get it there either.
“Don’t worry about that, just remember what we said Saturday about finding out how fun a bed would be.” He said
“You’re such a tease.”
“Oh I can do worse, don’t worry about that either.” He laughed.
She could hear some yelling coming from his end of the phone when he covered the phone and yelled back.
“Melody, I gotta go, we were just doing sound check. Can I still phone you after the concert or will you be asleep then?”
“Phone me, wake me up when I’m sleeping.” She said joking.
“Will do!” He said and hung up the phone.

Melody started making supper for her and the kids. They all sat together at the table even though the oldest boys had dates, Melody insisted on family dinners. After dinner she watched tv with Faith and Ryan while the other two were off to their dates.
After they had gone to bed Melody waited up for her boys getting home from their dates. Tyler was late, which he usually never was so Melody let it go and sent him to bed. It was 11.15pm now and she hoped to get Jon’s phone call soon.

She was lucky, while she was walking through the kitchen to her room she received a phone call. She quickly answered and shut the door behind her.
“Hey, you’re still up.” She heard him say.
“Yeah Tyler was late from his date. How did your show go?” She asked.
“It was fun, very nice seeing couples on dates. We even did a kiss cam part like at the football games.” He said and they both laughed.
“Did you play anything special then?”
“Yeah, we played more love songs than usual, even Thank You For Loving Me. Girls in the audience kept handing me roses, I had to keep denying them. I felt bad for them, they made an effort and wanted to be nice, so I finally just told them I’m allergic to roses.”
“That sucks.” She agreed with him.
“Yeah, I hate disappointing them like that but maybe next time they’ll give them to Richie.” Melody had to laugh at his joke.
She quickly told him about work and they said goodnight.
