Chapter 12

The week went fast for Melody. She drove around her kids to their sports activities and their games during the weekend. She loved seeing her kids playing their sports, she was glad they had something they could enjoy during the weekends and excel in.

Jon and Melody still talked on the phone every evening. Jon told her he would be in New York on Sunday for a few hours to spend time with Jesse for his birthday. She wished him a lot of fun and really hoped he would have a nice time with his oldest son.
Every time she talked to him, she couldn’t wait to see him on Thursday, just to be close to him again. They hadn’t seen each other in a week and she already missed him, she just hoped Thursday would come soon although she still had to tell him she couldn’t stay after the concert. She had to work the next day so she couldn’t really stay after the concert since she would have to be up and 6 and Jon would probably have a party after the concert.

On Sunday she once again said goodbye to her children for a week and arranged with Rob that the kids could stay at his place 2nd of March. She’d be travelling to Philadelphia that afternoon for Jon’s concert and birthday. She looked forward to that too.

Monday Melody started work early again. The alarm on her phone played ‘We Got It Going On’, she turned it off and got up to take a shower. She blow-dried and combed out her hair after she got dressed. Afterwards she had a quick breakfast, made some toast, ate it in the car and left for work.
She got there a little bit before 8am. She quickly said hello to everyone and went to the front desk to start her new day.
About an hour later Lori arrived and took her spot next to Melody to help check in visitors or advice them.
“Did you get to thank him for the flowers?” Lori asked.
“Yeah, he answered his phone when I called him after work.”
“That’s good.”
“I still feel stupid I didn’t get him anything though, I just didn’t think of it. How stupid of me.” Melody said still worried about it.
“Did he mind?”
“He said he didn’t but still, it was Valentine’s. I’ll have to make it up on his birthday.”
“Yeah he’d love that, get some candles and some wine.” Lori suggested with a smile.
“Maybe,” Melody said. “How was your Valentine’s gift? How was the trip?”

Lori started telling her about the surprise she got last Monday when she got home while helping customers. Her husband stood ready by the door with two suitcases. For a second Lori had panicked but then he showed her 2 plane tickets and they were off to San Francisco. They had a wonderful time there and Lori was really happy with a short break from everyday life. She promised to show Melody the photo’s when she got them developed. Lori and her husband had had a wonderful time there. They stayed at a very fancy hotel at the waterfront in San Francisco. They had day trips and went to the national park a few times. Lori told Melody about the beautiful sights and the animals they had seen there. She had some very nice photos of the animals and couldn’t wait to show them.

The rest of the day whenever Lori could remember something she told Melody about it immediately. Melody was really happy for her friend that she got to spend a romantic week with her husband. It made her think of Thursday and Friday and hope she and Jon could have something nice together too, they would actually have some time together now instead of phone calls. Of course it wouldn’t be a trip to San Francisco but she hadn’t seen him perform since last summer July 9th. It had been half a year and even though she saw him two weeks ago she couldn’t wait to see him in action again. Hopefully in better circumstances and Jon wouldn’t hurt his leg this time. Last time she saw him tear it calf muscle, it hurt her to see him hurt like that. But she knew he had recovered last summer and was fine doing shows now. She tried to forget it again and concentrated on work again.

Just as every evening when she got home, just as soon as she took her shoes off and put everything away, she got a phone call. He knew exactly when she got home. She answered her phone and was really happy he phoned. After listening to Lori having such a great week she couldn’t wait to hear Jon voice. He told her about the afternoon he had spent in New York with Jesse for his birthday on Saturday. He had a great time out with him and seeing the other kids before he had to go again. Jon couldn’t wait till the next weekend in March when he was home for a few days. Melody was happy for him; she knew it wasn’t easy to not be able to see you kids every day. At least she was lucky to see them every other week. He only got a few days once in a while.

After talking about the kids and work Jon told Melody about Thursday and Friday. He arranged front row tickets and backstage access. He would send a driver on Thursday after work to pick her up and bring her there. She could go backstage until the show and then she could be right in front of him on the front row. Afterwards they were still going out, so she could come along. Melody remembered she hadn’t told him yet that she had to work, no way around it anymore now.
“Jon, I’d love to stay with you but I have to work the next day, I couldn’t get a day off and I start early the next day.” Melody explained to him, she was still sad she couldn’t get the day off.
“Oh.” Jon said now disappointed too. He had looked forward to taking Melody out after the concert.
“Yeah, I’m sorry. I should have checked sooner if I could get a few days off.” Melody explained. She had felt bad about it since she checked for it.
“It’s ok; it’s not your fault. You have Saturday off right?” He asked
“Yes, I never do weekends.”
“Ok then, I’ll arrange someone to drive you home after the concert on Thursday and pick you up again on Friday.” Jon told her.
Melody explained to him that wouldn’t work out because her car would still be stuck at work if someone drove her home. He understood and would arrange someone to drive her back to the hotel. He was clearly disappointed about it and Melody felt stupid again for not telling him earlier or thinking to take a day off earlier. She wasn’t doing very well. She forgot Valentine’s and now she was turning him down.

Melody felt really bad. Now she was actually dating the man she’d loved for year, the one she had been dreaming of since she was 17 and now she was screwing everything up. After they had hung up she couldn’t blame him if he never phoned her again.
