Chapter 47

As usual Jon phoned Melody before they went to bed, today he phoned early, usually he phoned at 9 when he had a day off but it was only 8, so he had just come home. She apologized for J’s behaviour again, still not understanding what got into him. She didn’t take the excuse of his girlfriend breaking up, he still didn’t have to go accusing people of things like that. Melody told Jon how sweet he used to be, much more like Tyler and Ryan. He was even as shy as Faith was when he was little. But then she and Rob got divorced and J went to high school. She had always blamed school, since it was so different from middle school until Jon told her it probably wasn’t high school that changed a thing. Melody thought for a second and realized he was right. She couldn't believe she didn't see it earlier herself. She sighed and told Jon she had to go. They said goodbye and Melody went back downstairs.

Almost 3 hours later Melody finally went back upstairs, she had no idea it would take that long and Tyler had already fallen asleep on the couch, not being able to go to his room for the second time that night. She felt relieved she talked to him and hoped he finally understood. Jon had told her about Jake still being confused after 2 years, but he was much younger and for Melody’s kids it had been 5 years and J had been older. Melody was happy she got to talk to him and hoped it was all worked out, no wonder he had been so annoying the last few years he had been bottling up everything about the divorce.

She phoned Jon in her room while she got into bed.
“Where are you when I need a hug?” She asked before he could say anything.
“Awe I’m sorry babe, I wish I could give you a hug.” He tried to comfort her, knowing her talk wouldn’t have been easy. “I’ll give you something even better when I get home.” He promised.
“When do you come home?” She asked.
“27th, in the afternoon. Want to pick me up?”
“12 days.” Melody said. “And no I don’t, not like last time.” She wouldn’t go through that again, and then she preferred not knowing when he would land and just wait for a phone call.
“I’m still sorry for that and now I’m sorry I reminded you of that too, you had a rough enough night, you should get some sleep.” He said still in a comforting voice.
Melody agreed and they said goodbye to each other. She hung up the phone and put it next to her new photo on the night stand.

The next morning Jon was on a plane to Texas, catching up on reading the news from 4 different newspapers, as usual he sat by the window. He hadn’t had time to watch or read any news for a few days and needed to catch up now. He was all alone now anyway, the rest of the band had already taken off the night before so Jon was alone on the plane. The night before he had gotten all the decorations out of his car and gave them a place around the apartment. He went to put the picture of him and Melody in his room but put it in his bag instead so he could take it along with him. He had gotten his black travelling bag from the closet and took out a few t-shirts to wrap the frame in making sure it wouldn’t break. He only took casual clothes with him, his stage clothes were taken care for.

The rest of the week went by normal without any outbursts. Melody noticed J was home after school and wasn’t hanging around with his friends anymore. She hadn’t liked his friends and thought it would be better too.

She talked to Jon every night before he went on stage. They talked about their days and discussed more plans for Hawaii. Jon was there last year to kick off the first leg of the tour. He was happy with Melody’s choice and had arranged for her passport. He gave her the name of someone to help her rush the government for it and he would contact her tomorrow. Melody wondered how much it would cost, Jon said he’d paid for it but Melody didn’t want him to pay that much money for her. Jon couldn’t convince her and gave up.

Melody got the phone call Jon told her about the next day and arranged everything to get a passport. She would still have apply by herself but the rest would be taken care of. On Friday after work she rushed to the tax office to be there before they closed, it was busy in the city as usual and she was lucky to be there with 15 minutes to spare. She got all her forms together asking the person at the desk how soon she would have it and was told it would take 6 to 8 weeks. On her way back to the car Melody did the math and counted out, 6 weeks would be the end of May and after that it would be too late.

On her way home, while driving she phoned Jon telling him, almost panicking that her passport would probably not be ready in time and she couldn’t go with him then.
“Calm down, that’s why I gave you that person to help you. He’ll bug the government to be faster, he knows you have to leave the country, I can’t miss you for a whole month.” He explained to her, trying to calm her down.
“What about July then?” Melody asked when she had calmed down.
“I wasn’t sure if you wanted to go that long, with the kids and your job.”
“Damn it!” Melody cursed. “I forgot to take June off, remind me on Monday to talk to my boss.” Vacations longer than a week had to be discussed first.
Saturday morning Melody got an early phone call from Jon. She wondered why he was up that early and he explained there was a fan club trip so he had to go posing for pictures soon but then he changed the subject because he wasn’t phoning because of that. He told her there was an earthquake and tsunami in Japan. He was worried about the people he knew there but couldn’t reach anyone so he phoned her needing to talk to someone about it. Melody had no idea what had happened and Jon told her how bad it was. Melody couldn’t believe it and hoped everyone he knew was fine and told him that the power was probably just out and he should try again in a while. He got another call, he checked and told Melody it was the person he was trying to reach. He felt so relieved and told Melody he’d phone her back later.

The rest of the weekend went by, Jon phoned Melody back half an hour later telling her how relieved he was they were all fine and they should start a fund to help the people there that had lost their houses as it was really bad. Melody told him to wait and see, maybe other people were already doing something like that and he could contribute and focus on the things he was doing now. It reminded him of the beach house. He had found a website online that rented out private beach houses on all the islands. It had enough bedrooms but the kids would all have to share a room. They decided to let the kids meet too, the first weekend of April when Melody her children were home and Jon was on a break from touring. That way the children could get to know each other before spending a whole week together already.

The second week of Jon’s last tour leg, Melody was home alone. The kids had left for their dads and her house was now empty. She didn’t like it when her house was so quiet that’s why she worked longer days when they were gone. On Monday at work she had received a text from Jon telling her to go ask her boss to have the month off. Melody knew she would like July off too and decided to say she needed 2 months off and if her boss said no, she would shorten it to one month.

During lunch she went into her boss’ office, nervous, thinking he would never let her take such a long break to go on a vacation.

After work, she phoned Jon in the car like she always did. He didn’t like it when she did, telling her she needed to pay attention to the road but Melody stuck to the idea a hands free system was safe.
“Jon, I got great news!” Melody said excited when he picked up and she didn’t leave him any time to say anything when he did.
“Then tell me!”
“I explained to my boss I was going on tour with someone, I didn’t want to mention you yet, so I would be gone for 2 months.” She didn’t pause to let Jon ask about the two months. “So he said I could work from there. He wants me to go with you to all the hotels and see how they run their hotel and see if we could improve our hotel.” Melody said excited.
“That’s great, so you’ll be there for two months?”
“Yes!”
“You have a great boss. It’ll be great to have you by my side.”
“Oh and after that, I get two weeks off at the beginning of August.” Melody added, still excited about the whole thing.
“Even better!”
