Chapter 55

After telling Jon what her day would be like while he was making breakfast for his kids Melody sat down in the living room where J was still watching tv alone. Melody usually let the kids make their own breakfast during the weekends.
“So I’m living together now? Doesn’t that involve living in the same house?” Melody asked.
“He was here all week and now you’re going there all week, is he coming back the week after that?” J asked back.
“I don’t know, maybe, would it be a problem if he did?”
“No of course not.”
“Are you sure? You didn’t seem to like him much when you first met him.” Melody said a bit more serious, she had seen him yelling that day.
“No really, after we talked, it really is fine.” J said consistent.
“What did he talk to you about then?” She asked interested, curious about what he might have said to her son that made him like him better.
J grunted and shifted uneasily in his seat, not sure if he should tell her. “He said if Lisa cheated on me like that, she didn’t really care for me.” He paused, not sure if he should go on to the next part Jon had said. “He said he had cheated on his wife years ago when they did really long tours but he always regretted it the second after he did it and told her.” Melody knew he had, he had said so in more than one interview. “But then his wife cheated on him and she wanted to leave him but he also said that didn’t matter because if she hadn’t he wouldn’t have found the perfect person for him,” He paused again, “you.” He smiled at her and Melody smiled back, happy to hear it. “Then he said I’d find that perfect person too.”
Melody threw her arm around him and pulled him close. “You’re 18, you will find someone. You’re hopefully still going to college in September, a lot of new people, you will find someone.”
“Yeah yeah, I know and I’m working on college. I got 2 A’s this week now that I can’t hang out with people anyway but they don’t talk to me anymore.”
“Good, you can still get that football scholarship then. Why aren’t they talking to you?” She tried to be optimistic for him.
“After we talked I realized its stupid to stay angry about something that happened years ago, so I let it go and everyone else wants to hold on to whatever they’re angry at so they don’t talk to me.”
“Friends want to you to feel happy, they should be happy for you.”
“I know that too.” He sat up when Melody finally let him go.

Jon’s morning hadn’t been that hard. He made breakfast and got everyone to the table so they could eat together. Romeo was still talking about his party and the presents he got. They talked about their weekend and Stephanie had to tell Romeo to be quiet a few times before he could spill anything. Jon did notice this time and started wondering what he wasn’t allowed to say.

After breakfast he watched cartoons with Jake and Romeo. The shows were usually completely pointless and made no sense, cartoons used to be better he thought. After an hour he got too annoyed with it and turned it to a news channel telling the boys they should go play.

Later that afternoon last minute homework was remembered at both houses. Melody and Jon both tried to help them finish it before dinner. Dinner would be earlier today for Melody so she could drive them to their dad’s and she could drive to the city and get there not too late an hour. She wanted to stop at the mall too to get something for Romeo’s birthday.

After an early dinner Melody drove the kids to the other end of the town. Robert still lived in Woodbridge too so the kids could stay at the school’s they’ve always gone to and could switch houses weekly. She gave them each a hug and a kiss, which was wiped away as soon as she gave it and said goodbye.

On her way back to the highway Melody stopped at a mall, she walked into a clothing store first and found the boys department. She hadn’t been shopping for boy’s clothes in years. There were a lot of t-shirts with pictures from tv shows and movies but she wasn’t sure which ones Romeo liked so decided to pass on those. A little bit further she was looking through the racks of clothing when she found a black t-shirt. It had a picture of an electric guitar in bright colour and it could even be played. She wanted to try it out when she noticed the small amplifier that could be attached to a belt had a tag that read batteries weren’t included. She looked through the sizes and asked the lady at the register to test it for to be sure. When it worked Melody let it be wrapped. She couldn’t just give him his gift without batteries so stopped at a store for those too.

An hour later she greeted the doorman and went up the elevator. When the doors opened to the kitchen, Jon turned around to the sound.
“Who’s the-” He started to ask, he wasn’t expecting anyone so hadn’t expected the elevator to open. “Oh” He got up from the couch and met her in the kitchen. “What are you doing here? Where are your kids?”
“I dropped them off at their dad’s. You stayed at my house for the week so now I’m staying at yours.” Melody explained.
“Really?” He sounded hopeful.
“Yes, all week.” She said lifting up her bag as proof.
He put his arms around her, giving her a big hug, and twirled her around. He set her back down on the ground and gave her a kiss.
The boys in the living room started laughing.
“It might be getting close to bed time.” Jon said without taking his eyes off of Melody. The boys immediately stopped laughing. “Come, I’ll put your bag away.” Jon said reaching for her bag.
Melody handed over her bag with clothes for the week, she held the bag that contained Romeo’s present.

Jon came back just a minute later and noticed Melody was already sitting with the boys, he took his spot in between them again and went back to watching tv with them.

When the tv show was over Melody announced she still had a present for Romeo. His face immediately brightened up with a big smile. Melody held out the bag for him and let him open it. He wasn’t careful to open it and tore the paper away but took the t-shirt out carefully. He looked at it and turned it around for the rest to see. “That’s cool, thanks Melody.” He said with a big smile.
“Put it on, see if it fits.” Jon encouraged him.
Romeo put on the shirt but looked around where to put the amplifier.
“Come here.” Melody said, he was standing in front of her and she pulled him a bit closer so she could reach him. She put in the batteries and hooked it to his jeans. “There you go.”

Jon picked Romeo up and put him across his lap. “Let’s see if I can play you.” He pushed the buttons on the strings and actual guitar noises came out. Jon turned up the amplifier and tried again. Romeo couldn’t stop laughing telling him it tickled, that only encouraged Jon and started tickling him. When Jake started laughing because Romeo was Jon didn’t leave him out and tickled him too.
Melody loved the sight of him playing with his kids, it looked so sweet, and she started smiling.
Jon noticed her smiling. “I think we left someone out." He started reaching for her.
“No, no, no, no.” But she was too late, Jon started tickling her ribs and Jake and Romeo climbed over the couch to reach her.

When Jake fell off the couch on his bum and started laughing even harder Jon thought it was enough and it was time for bed.

The boys didn’t complain and stopped their game. Melody followed Jon and them downstairs. She realized she hadn’t been downstairs yet. When she walked down the stairs she saw there was a big den with a lot of toys. There was a racetrack set up in the middle of the room. She didn’t get to explore the rest as the boys their bedrooms were to the left of the stairs. Each bedroom had its own bathroom with it.
Romeo was in his bed first, Jon gave him a hug and a kiss and wished him good night and left for Jake’s room, leaving Melody behind.
“Did I do a good job not telling dad?” Romeo asked.
“You did a really good job.” Melody said and gave him a hug.
“Does that mean I can have pancakes for breakfast?” Romeo smiled a big smile.
“You really do know how to get your way.” Melody saw his smile only get bigger. She wished him good night and found Jon in the next room saying good night to Jake. Melody gave him a hug too.
They passed by the other two bedrooms on their way back upstairs and wished the older two a good night too.
